Carr Canyon – Huachuca Mts.

August 11, 2013

Carr Canyon is on the east side of the Huachuca Mts., just south of Sierra Vista. Last year a fire started on a ridge, went down the canyon and onto the flatlands beyond. Burned a bunch of houses. Again, a wet summer has restored things, much greener than I would of expected just one year later. Saw Arizona Madrone (Arbutus arizonica) and found Arctostaphylos pungens in bloom in August! Don’t know whether this is a southern adaption, this is Madrean Encinal, or whether the wet summer has caused this. Didn’t see a second bloom on the other side at Parker or Sunnyside Canyon. Another character that shows a plastic variation, the SEINet list shows flowering for all times of the year except December with peaks in February through April. I took any description of flowers as flowering, maybe this was a mistake but I would think that describing flowers would mean that the collector was seeing flowers, I’ll have to check this.
