March 2, 2014 Sabino Canyon, Catalina Mts., AZ
I remember Sabino Canyon years ago when you could drive up the canyon. Hadn’t been here for many years. Walked about three miles up the canyon and back. Lots of water in the creek and the various crossings had formed dams to hold back the water. At some of the crossings the water was flowing over the road. Not much growing yet but a beautiful day.
March 9, 2014 Lower Green Mt. Trail, Catalina Mts., AZ
This trail starts where Bug Spring Trail ends and continues up from Bear Canyon into the pines. Found Arctostaphylos pungens growing with no A. pringlei in site, then went through a drier patch and A. pungens started again with finally A. pringlei showing up. Found an orange morph of A. pungens and saw some pinkish flowers but not the solid pink flower morph. Saw many Arbutus arizonica, a beautiful tree, some sprouting in a burned area. Saw a few Spring Azure (Celastrina ladon) butterflies and a few others I couldn’t identify. Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are showing up and a hovering fly or bee I couldn’t get to hold still long enough to identify.
