The Southern Sierra Nevada are a hotspot for diversity within the California Floral Province. The main interest here is the Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum). The redwoods are taller but the Sequoia are much more massive. They also are a separate genus from the redwoods (Lanner, 2007). It is hard to get a good idea of how large these trees are until you get right up close to them. Beautiful place but it was Sunday and by mid day was getting rather crowded.
